Dr. Sam Van Hecke

I am Dr. Sam Van Hecke, hematologist. In 2013 I graduated with high distinction as Master of Medicine at KU Leuven. In 2019 I completed my specialization in internal medicine and hematology.

At University Hospitals Leuven (UZ Leuven), I gained extensive experience in the outpatient clinic, day hospital, inpatient ward and apheresis unit of the Department of Hematology. I developed broad expertise in both benign and malignant blood disorders, as well as supportive care.

My training took place in an internationally accredited stem cell transplantation center, where more than 130 transplants are performed each year. In addition, I have published several scientific papers and in 2023 contributed to the Belgian guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of Waldenström’s disease. I am also a member of the Belgian Lymphoma Working Group.

As a general hematologist, I have a special interest in lymphomas, multiple myeloma and benign blood disorders. I also perform technical procedures such as bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, lumbar puncture, and administration of intrathecal chemotherapy.

Currently I work at AZ Oostende and AZ Sint-Jan Bruges. Based on this experience, I now also offer a private consultation in the West Coast region, making specialized hematological care more accessible, closer to home.

During my consultations I focus on clear communication and close collaboration with your general practitioner, to ensure your care is well coordinated.
